What is a Sash Window Fastener?

Sash fasteners, also known as sash locks, sash catches or latches, are hardware components used to secure and lock sash windows in place. They are designed to lock and secure the two sashes of a double-hung or sliding sash window in a closed position plus prevent the sashes from opening unintentionally, adding a layer of security to the window.

What types of Sash Fasteners does SD Hardware offer?

SD Hardware provides a wide range of Sash Window fasteners. The Brighton Fastener is one of the most common fasteners which employs a screw mechanism to draw the two meeting rails closer. This accomodates minor variations in the heights of the meeting rails between the upper and lower sashes. Fitch fasteners are particularly common in traditional and historic window designs. Similar in function are Claw Fasteners, known for their distinctive claw-like design. Quadrant Arm and Straight Arm fasteners use a horizontal swinging arm to lock the two sashes into place.

How do I determine the appropriate number of Sash Fasteners to use for my windows?

It is advised that one sash fastener is fitted to the centre of windows up to 799mm and two fitted each side to windows over 800mm wide.

Are sash window fasteners easy to install?

Most sash window fasteners are relatively easy to install, especially if you have basic DIY skills. As with all Sash Window furniture we advise pre-drilling the screw holes or use a similar sized pozi screw to make the thread of the screw in the window first. Then carefully tighten the screw with a hand screwdriver.

Can Sash Window Fasteners be locked for added security?

We offer both locking and non-locking sash window fasteners. Note that all fasteners when fastened prevent the window from being opened from the outside. Locking fasteners are ideal for placement on ground floor windows allowing for added protection on the windows. These fasteners can also be useful for childproofing windows, as they limit a child's ability to open them. Overall Non-Locking fasteners add convenience and easy egress while Locking fasteners add extra security and prevent the window being opened accidently from the inside.
