Components of Sash Window Furniture

Sash windows, also known as sliding sash windows, consist of two or more vertically sliding panels that can be opened by moving them up and down. They have a rich history dating back to the 17th century, with their design evolving over the centuries. They are an architectural hallmark of various periods, from Georgian and Victorian to Edwardian and beyond.

Sash windows have a unique appeal, offering a glimpse into the architectural styles of bygone eras. However, it's the intricate details that truly bring out their charm. Sash window furniture, including handles, lifts, fasteners, restrictors and pulleys, play a crucial role in both the aesthetics and functionality of these windows.

The timeless hardware used on classic sash windows has remained largely unchanged over different historical periods. However, if you aim to preserve the authentic appearance of your period sash windows, there are several factors to bear in mind when selecting the appropriate hardware. SD Hardware supplies a comprehensive range of Sash Hardware neatly collated together as our Sash Heritage range. This range includes:

Sash Lifts

Sash lifts are affixed to the lower sash to enable the lifting and opening of the sash window. They are designed to provide a grip or handle that makes it easier to open and close sash windows making the operation smoother and more convenient.

Sash Fasteners

Sash fasteners, also known as sash locks, sash catches or latches, are hardware components used to secure and lock sash windows in place. They are designed to lock and secure the two sashes of a double-hung or sliding sash window in a closed position plus prevent the sashes from opening unintentionally, adding a layer of security to the window. It is advised that one sash fastener is fitted to windows up to 799mm and two fitted to windows over 800mm wide.

Sash Eyes

Sash eyes are normally fitted to the top rail of the top sash allowing for the opening and closing of the top sash. They are useful for taller windows as they can used to open a close a window with a pole hook. In most cases, one sash eye can be fitted to windows up to 479mm and two for windows over 480mm wide. Sash eyes are sometimes used in the same way as a Sash Lift.

Sash Handles

Sash handles are primarily used for opening and closing sash windows. They provide a grip or handle that allows you to apply force comfortably to the window sash, making it easier to move the sash up and down. Sash handles are typically installed on the bottom rail of the lower sash and provide a similar function to a sash lift. They can also be fitted on the exterior of the window by being fitted to the bottom rail of the top sash which allows the top sash to be pulled down.

Sash Pulleys

Sash pulleys, in conjunction with sash weights, facilitate the smooth operation of window opening and closing (item 2 in the diagram). This is achieved by directing the movement of sash weights, typically made of lead or stainless steel, connected via cords or chains. Concealed within the window frame, these weights work harmoniously with the sash pulleys, ensuring that as you raise or lower the sash, the cords or chains are guided by the pulleys to effectively counterbalance the weight of the sash.

SD hardware supplies pulley in 3 sizes including 1 ¾ inch, 2 inch and

Choosing the Look of Your Sash Hardware

Whether upgrading an existing window or installing new ones, selecting premium sash window furniture can transform your home and elevate its overall look and feel. Whichever finish or style you opt for our premium Sash Heritage window furniture range is designed to enhance the appearance of your windows dramatically. With matching finishes across the entire range, you can have the confidence that your window will look complete.

Choosing a finish

Selecting the right finish for sash window hardware is an important decision as it can significantly impact the overall aesthetics of your rooms. The choice of finish should complement your home's style, decor, and personal preference.

The most prevalent finishes for sash window hardware are polished brass, polished chrome, or satin chrome. Historically, brass was the prevailing choice until the 1920s, when polished chrome gained popularity. Antique brass and Antique Nickel are also good choices of finish when going for a classic look. Bronze finishes can also be ideal for traditional or Victorian-style homes, while satin nickel, satin chrome, black or white finishes are often the preferred choice for more modern and contemporary interiors.

There is, of course, no set rule but it is often advised to match your sash hardware finish with other hardware in your home such as door hardware and lighting fixtures. If you are replacing only a few windows within a building, it is advisable to ensure that the style aligns with the existing ironmongery.

Choosing a Style

The easiest way to pick a style is, again, to decide whether you are looking for a contemporary or traditional look. This can be determined by how ornate or simple the design is. Designs with more detailed features such as borders, grooves, chamfers, and bevels tend to provide a more historical look. Simpler designs with clean, sharp edges or smooth curves tend to fit more modern properties but are more versatile and can be used in traditional properties as well without looking out of place.

Quality Materials and Craftsmanship

The vast majority of our Sash Heritage range is carefully manufactured using solid brass, a metal alloy composed primarily of copper and zinc. Solid brass is highly regarded for its versatility, attractive appearance and its exceptional durability and resistance to corrosion. This makes it a long-lasting choice for hardware applications.

Benefits of Upgrading Your Sash Window Hardware

Improved Aesthetics

Upgrading your sash windows with premium window furniture can instantly elevate the aesthetics of your home. It's a cost-effective way to give your property a facelift, creating a lasting impression on guests and passers-by.

Increased Property Value

In addition to visual appeal, sash window upgrades can increase the value of your property. Potential buyers and appraisers often pay attention to these historical features, and quality window furniture can make your home more desirable on the market.

Long-Term Cost Savings

While premium sash window furniture may require a slightly higher upfront investment, it pays off in the long run. Quality hardware is built to last, reducing the need for frequent replacements and repairs. This can result in significant cost savings over time.

Installation and Maintenance Tips

Installation Advice

If you're considering upgrading your sash window furniture, it's important to ensure proper installation. We always advise if you decide to fit the sash hardware yourself you always pre-drill the screw holes or use a similar-sized pozi screw to make the thread of the screw in the window first. Then carefully tighten the screw with a HAND screwdriver. Using power tools has the potential to damage the window frame and finish on the hardware and even misalign the fixtures.

Maintenance Advice

While minimal maintenance is required, we have some handy tips to enhance the product's longevity. Brassware, when cared for properly, can deliver many years of satisfaction and prove to be a wise long-term investment. For lacquered brass products, use only a damp soapy cloth followed by a dry soft duster for cleaning. Avoid using any metal cleaning products, as they can damage the lacquer. Over time, the protective lacquer may deteriorate. In such cases, it will be necessary to completely remove the lacquer using a lacquer or paint stripper. Once the lacquer is removed, regular polishing of the brass will be required.

For other plated items, treat them with a damp soapy cloth and then gently wipe with a dry soft duster, taking care not to cause any scratches. Powder-coated items typically offer good rust protection. However, if there are any chips in the finish, you can touch them up with matching coloured metal paint. Products with moving parts can be lubricated using a basic household lubricant oil and/or a moisture displacer like WD40 or a similar product.
