What Are Espagnolette Handles?

09 June 2016

Due to increasing popularity over the years, espagnolette handles are now available in a range of styles and varied functionality which appeal to any customer. They are an integral part of modern day double glazed windows and the handle can be used to turn several locks around the perimeter of a window. So if you’re on the lookout for window hardware and need a little advice, here’s our guide to espagnolette handles.

How Do Espagnolette Handles Work?
Derived from French, espag is a shortened term for espagnolette and relates to the lock that is placed on the front of a window or door. These window handles are the decorative and operational part of a secure locking system to lock a casement window on several locking points. They are crafted with a metal spindle on the back which is integrated into the window frame to operate the window mechanism. The handles can normally be seen on uPVC but also timber and aluminium.

Every spindle length can be different, so it is important to measure the length carefully if you are going to replace it. This type of handle comes in different forms such as claws, deadbolts, roller cams or a combination.

Styles of Espagnolette Handles

The espagnolette handle can come in many styles to suit the age and feel of the property. In our range of handles, we have a range from the Devoran Black style for the very traditional cottage look to the SOX style for modern, urban types of property. In addition, we have various brands available offering a range of styles including: Alpine, Cornish Heritage, Timber Series, From the Anvil and Isca which all have their own individual look and feel to complement most styles required.

All of these espagnolette handles come with a locking facility to enable the window to be fully secure in the event of a forced entry to the property. Additionally here at SD Hardware, our range of espagnolette handles also come complete with M5 fixings, screws and spindles of at least 40mm which fit into the espag locking system such as the Vanguard, Excalibur, PN and Maco.

Cranked Espagnolette Handles
Cranked espag handles simply refer to an offset lever design which allows more hand clearance against the frame of the window. This may be more beneficial where the espag handles may be close to the edge of the frame, making it difficult to operate. To combat this, the handles are available as a left-handed cranked design (opened clockwise) or a right-handed cranked design (opened anti-clockwise) according to the orientation of the window.

From modern to classic designs, find the perfect espagnolette handle to suit your windows here.
