Can I replace my existing door letter plate?

Yes, existing door letter plates can typically be replaced. However, it's essential to ensure that the new letter plate is compatible in terms of size, style, and installation method with your door.

How can I select an appropriate replacement letter plate?

It is advised to choose a replacement slightly larger than the original to cover any marks left by the old fitting. While an exact match for fixing bolt centers is unlikely, look for a close match or consider drilling slightly larger holes or using doweling. Modify the cut out size as needed; going slightly larger facilitates installation. Slope the bottom of the cut out outward to prevent water ingress. Remember that the cut out size differs from the letter plate aperture; it needs to be larger to accommodate the flap size and movement. Consider adding a chamfer to accommodate the letter plate mechanism.

How can I prolong the life of my letter plate?

While minimal maintenance is required, there are ways to prolong the life of a letter plate. Periodically clean the letter plate to remove dirt, dust, and debris. Use a cloth soaked in warm soapy water to wipe down both the interior and exterior surfaces of the letter plate. Ensure to dry the letter plate after washing to avoid streaks. Apply a small amount of lubricant, such as grease or silicone spray, to the moving parts of the letter plate mechanism. This helps to keep the flap operating smoothly and prevents it from sticking.

What is the difference between a letter plate and letter plate tidy?

A letter plate, also known as a letterbox or letter flap, is a fixture installed on the exterior of a door to allow mail, letters, or small packages to be delivered securely into a building or residence. A letter plate tidy is a separate accessory or attachment installed on the interior side of a door. A letter plate tidy is also designed to catch mail as it passes through the letter plate and prevent it from falling directly onto the floor. Some letter plates are sold as both an internal and external kit (letter plate set) and include an adjustable sleeve to accomodate different thicknesses of door. An example of this is 40-80 where the letter plate set can be fitted to doors between 40mm and 80mm in thickness.
